Oxytocin is often called the ‘love hormone’. It has a role in a number of bodily processes, including labour and feeding a baby. The way birth unfolds is complex, and no single hormone or technique can guarantee a particular experience.

Many people find it helpful to think about what makes them feel calm, private and supported. They might choose dimmer lighting, familiar music or sounds, water, movement, a birth ball, touch or massage. A partner, doula or other trusted person can also help protect a sense of comfort and reassurance.

These ideas are options to explore, not a checklist or a promise. Every birth is different, and your maternity team can talk through the clinical care and choices available to you.
